Mark Grist: From Classroom to Centre Stage

Mark Grist is a multi-award-winning poet, performer, battle rapper, and children’s author based just outside Cambridge, UK. Formerly an English teacher, Mark transitioned into the world of spoken word and rap, gaining international recognition for his engaging performances and educational outreach.

He has held titles such as Peterborough Poet Laureate, Chief Bard of the Fens, and Edinburgh Fringe Slam Champion. Mark’s poetry and rap videos have amassed over 60 million views online, and he has been honoured twice at the International Webby Awards. His notable works include the viral poem “Girls Who Read,” which won two International Lovie Awards for ‘Best Individual Performance’ and ‘Best Viral Video’.

Mark’s work has been featured on BBC1, ITV, Channel 4, and BBC 6 Music. He starred in Redbull TV’s “Mark Grist Battles the World” and has been involved in educational content for BBC Ideas and BBC Teach. As an author, his children’s books, such as “Rhinos Don’t Cry,” are published by Bloomsbury.

Beyond writing, Mark hosts the podcast documentary series “Mark Can’t Rap,” exploring the craft of writing rap lyrics and the misconceptions surrounding the art form. He continues to visit schools worldwide, helping teachers make poetry more engaging and inspiring students to express themselves through poetry and rap.
